Installation

To install MathType, first close MathType, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Then, launch the MathType Setup Program by double-clicking the downloaded file. For Mac, this file is named MathType-mac-en.pkg, and for Windows, it is MathType-win-<lang>.exe, where <lang> represents the two-letter language code of the version you downloaded.

Evaluation mode

You can evaluate MathType for 30 days by selecting the evaluation option after installation. The full version of MathType will be installed, and you will have access to all the features of the unlocked version.

During the trial period, when you open MathType, a dialog box will display the number of days left in your trial. You can also manually check the remaining days by going to the Help menu in MathType (not the MathType tab in Word) and selecting “About.” You can activate MathType at any time using a valid product key without needing to reinstall the software.

Activate the product

You can activate MathType either directly from the MathType window or through the MathType tab in Word. After installing, when you first open MathType, you will have the option to enter your product key if you have purchased one, or to start a 30-day trial if you do not have a product key.

Activating during the evaluation period

If you are using the trial version of the product and decide to activate it with a purchased product key, go to the MathType Product Key Help menu within MathType itself (not the MathType tab in Word), and select the Unlock/Register MathType command. Then, enter the product key in the dialog box that appears.

You can find the product key on the payment confirmation web page and in the order confirmation email you received.

Once you have the product key, input your information. To receive free technical support and important updates, register your copy of MathType by entering your email address and selecting the checkbox that permits the installer to send your information to WIRIS.

Note : To activate MathType from Word: Start by clicking the Unlock/Register MathType command in Word, which will take you to this documentation page. To complete the activation or registration, return to the MathType tab in Word and click “Inline” to open MathType. Next, in MathType’s Help menu, select “Unlock/Register.” Using this command from within MathType rather than directly from Word will enable you to follow the steps outlined below.

Expired MathType trial

After the evaluation period ends, many of MathType’s features will be disabled. When you open the application, you’ll see this notification:

If you opt to continue using MathType in deactivated mode, your options will be limited:

What you can’t do: Editing equations is not possible in deactivated mode.
What you can do: You can still access the MathType Cut and Copy Preferences to select a text format, such as LaTeX or MathML. This allows you to copy the equation in one of these formats and paste it elsewhere. This feature remains available to help you use your equations in different contexts, like on a WordPress web page, a blog, or within an LMS like Canvas or D2L.

If you’re working in Word, you can convert the equation to a Word equation format. By double-clicking an equation in your document, you will see the following dialog:

If you click “Cancel,” you’ll return to the document without any changes. If you click “Yes,” MathType will convert the equation into an OMML (Office Math Markup Language) equation, enabling you to continue using and editing it as needed. If you click “No” and choose “Continue in deactivated mode,” the equation will open in MathType, but without any toolbars available.

If your license expires

For more details on this topic, refer to the Using MathType page. If your MathType license expires, it will function as if it were an expired 30-day trial. To re-activate MathType, you can purchase a new product key from the Wiris Store.

MathType setup dialog

This dialog gives you the option to either install MathType or remove an existing installation. If you are installing MathType for the first time, the “Remove” button will be disabled.

Install

Click this option to install MathType into the folder specified in the “Destination Folder” box.

Destination Folder

Use this section to select a different folder on your hard disk where Setup will install most of the MathType files. Click the “Browse” button to navigate to your desired folder. Setup will also install fonts and system files into the appropriate system folders on your hard disk.

Click “OK” to start the installation process. Click “Exit” to terminate Setup and cancel the installation.

Remove

Click this option to remove MathType from the folder specified in the “Remove MathType 7 from” box.

Use this box to select the folder on your hard disk from which Setup will remove MathType. Click the “Browse” button to navigate to the desired folder.

Click “OK” to start the removal process. Click “Exit” to close Setup and cancel the removal.

Installing over an older version

MathType 5/6.x and the newer version of MathType cannot be installed simultaneously. Installing the newer version will remove MathType 5/6.x. However, you will still be able to exchange documents containing MathType 5/6.x equations, as they are fully compatible.

If you are using an earlier version (3.x or earlier), you can choose to overwrite it or install the new version in a different folder. Carefully consider whether you want to replace your old version of MathType with the new one.

Overwriting an old version of MathType

If you choose to overwrite the older version of MathType, any equations you created with the old version will automatically be updated to the new version whenever you edit them. This is usually beneficial as it allows you to take advantage of the new features in MathType when working with your equations.

However, if you plan to send documents with equations to others, consider the following:

They need to be able to edit the equations (viewing and printing are not an issue).
They do not have MathType 7 and are unwilling to upgrade.

If both conditions apply, it’s best to keep the old version of MathType installed. This way, when you edit existing equations, the old version will be used. For new equations, you can choose between using the old or new version of MathType.

To remove MathType, follow these steps based on your operating system:

For Windows:

Select Remove MathType from the MathType sub-menu in the Windows Start menu.
Alternatively, open the Control Panel from the Start menu, go to Add/Remove Programs (or Programs and Features or Apps and Features), and select MathType from the list of installed applications to remove it.

For Mac:

Open a Finder window and navigate to Applications/MathType.
Run the Uninstall MathType application found there.

This will launch the MathType 7 Setup with the Remove option pre-selected. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation process.

Checking for the latest version

MathType offers both automatic and manual methods for checking if a newer version of MathType 7 is available. These checks require an Internet connection to access the latest version information. After performing a check, a dialog box will appear to show the results of the comparison.

By default, MathType will check for updates once a month. If you prefer to check more frequently, you can manually initiate an update check by selecting Check for Latest Version Now… from the Help menu in MathType (under MathType on the Web). Note that this command is located within the MathType application itself, not on the MathType tab in Word.

If no new version is available, you might occasionally see information about other Wiris products. To avoid these notifications, either check the Don’t show me this again box in the message or uncheck the Show Tips option in the MathType on the Web sub-menu under the Help menu in MathType. This is the same process for both Windows and Mac versions, as shown in the screenshot below.
